Urban Partnership - Estelí, Nicaragua

- Die Oberbürgermeister von Esteli und Bielefeld: Francisco Valenzuela und Pit Clausen
Since 1986 the projetcs in Nicaragua of the Welthaus Bielefeld are embedded in the urban partnership between the cities of Bielefeld and Estelí, a city in northern Nicaragua. In consultation with the City and four other European twin towns of Estelí (Sheffield, Evry, Delft and Sant Feliu de Llobregat) the Welthaus Bielefeld realises major projects to improve infrastructure in the Nicaraguan twin town, which are mainly financed by the European Union. A drinking-and wastewater project and a project in the agro-ecological environment of Estelí are just some of the latest projects. In 1999, the Welthaus started its currently largest development project: the creation of a new district with its infrastructure after the devastation caused by Hurricane Mitch. Recently, a new public library was built in the center, which primarily benefits the children in Esteli, where the schools do not provide enough and adequate teaching and learning.
In addition, long-term project relationships developed over the years from the individual conection between schools, kindergartens, community groups and individuals from Bielefeld and Estelí. Through personal support and material aquisition improvements of buildings and the work done by the partners in Estelí could be realised.
These partnership and the help of groups from Bielefeld is supervised and supported in content by the Welthaus Bielefeld.
Within the scope of the "remain penny action" municipal employees of the city of Bielefeld for years already support a women's environmental project in the district Boris Vega. Which became an example worth copying for other women's groups in Esteli today. All these projects are workinf for an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable development.
